How does JoyPop™ work
How it works
JoyPop™ App Features
The JoyPop™ app is designed to promote daily resilience through a variety of trauma-informed activities. It is based on research in trauma and resilience and how to move from adverse childhood experiences to more healthy living. It is an app that takes a two-pronged approach.
Not only are there activities that help distract and reset from trauma symptoms, but also activities focused on enhancing the positives by giving tools and strategies to name, manage, and regulate emotionality.
How it works
Opening the app
Each time the app is opened, you will be prompted to enter your phone’s passcode or face ID. This feature adds an extra layer of security and privacy to the app.
Main menu
The app’s main menu includes all of its features. These include a feature for your circle of trust, mood ratings, journal, and a calendar. There’s also an activities section which includes a game, an art feature, breathing exercises, and a feature to support sleep.
App Features
Call for help
In the top right corner of the app there is a call for help feature which links several helpline numbers that can be called or texted to provide support when you are feeling distressed or just need someone to talk to.
Circle of trust
Circle of trust is a feature that allows you to input up to six people into the app. This provides a quick connection to social support when needed. Examples of people that could be included are counsellors, friends, and family members.
Rate my mood
Rating your mood can help with identifying emotions and feelings which can lead to better emotional awareness and self-regulation. In the app you can rate four moods, happiness, sadness, anger, and ‘meh’. Moods are rated by sliding the wave up and down, the higher the wave, the higher the emotion. If you express that you’re happy, a positive message will pop up. If you’re not feeling happy, a prompt will pop up to use the activities features to help improve your mood.
Journal
Journaling your thoughts can help relieve stress and can contribute to better health and wellbeing. The Joypop app has a journal feature that provides you with a prompt each time you write, however you can write about any of your thoughts and feelings. To save a journal entry, just add in a title and write!
Calendar
The calendar is where all of your journal entries are stored so you can review them to see how you’ve felt over time. To view a specific journal entry, all you have to do is find the date it was written! The calendar is also where you can view your mood tracking over time with weekly and monthly summaries. This can help you identify changes in your mood overtime!
Activities
The Joypop app includes several activities to promote resilience. This includes, the game SquareMoves, breathing exercises, a feature to create art, and calming sounds in the SleepEase feature!
Square moves
SquareMoves is a game in the Joypop app that helps provide a helpful distraction. To play, tap on the figure to rotate it and swipe left and right to position it. To score points, create a line!
Breathing excercise
The Joypop app includes a deep breathing feature to encourage a physiological state of relaxation (e.g. muscle relaxation, slower heart rate). There are two breathing exercises within this feature. The first is Balanced Breathing, which is a shorter breathing exercise for faster relief. The second is Relaxation Breathing, which is a longer exercise for a deeper state of relaxation that can be used to help prepare your body for sleep! After choosing one of these options, a breathing circle will appear to help guide you through the exercise.
Art
Sometimes it can be hard to express complex emotions, so doodling can help express these feelings. To use the art feature in the Joypop app, select one of the eight colours and start drawing by dragging your finger across the screen! To erase, select the erase icon. If you want to save your creation, take a screenshot and you’ll have a copy in your camera roll.
Sleep ease
When entering the SleepEase feature, you will first be prompted with tips to prepare your body for sleep. Afterwards, you can choose between two relaxing water sounds, bubbling river and waterfall! You can set a timer up to 99 minutes for how long you want to listen to the water sound. You can also turn your screen off while listening!
